Day 5 - My Favorite Memory
Live | View Comments | permalink4. A picture of your favorite memory.
My favorite memory is tattooed on my wrist. And most people don't know that my family ever owned a teepee until they ask me about my tattoo. :) My favorite memory is of my family's participation in the Florida Indian Hobbyist Association. Twice a year we would go to FIHA sponsored events. And the best... the greatest... the most fantabulous of all was Thanksgiving. All of our FIHA friends would bring their teepees out to Fort Wilderness in Orlando and set up a little village. We would camp out, share stories, watch the UF vs FSU football game (my dad and his friends are big gator fans!) and build big fires for smores! On Thanksgiving every family would put their turkey into this huge pit that the daddy's had dug, push all of the picnic tables together, and bring a side dish to the table. I learned that the best tasting baked apples are cooked in a dutch oven from our teepee neighbor one year who let me help him make it. You can see a video about the whole thing here.
My sister and I would hike around the little area, bike up to the general store, play in the playground and enjoy each other's company the way we never did when we were at home and had a million other people to play with. It was simple. The food was good, the weather was gorgeous, the outdoors were the perfect unscary mixture of Disney manicure and wild forrest. If I ever do end up with childrens I'm most certainly going to pick up this tradition again. It was glorious.
I don't have any pictures on the computer of US at these events so you'll have to settle for fakes. USA Today did an article about Thanksgiving trips to take...
Among the more unusual Thanksgiving traditions at Walt Disney World Resort is a gathering of some 20 families at the park's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. For more than 30 years, they've been erecting a village of tepees there and cooking several dozen turkeys in big open pits. "Our kids look forward to it more than Christmas," said Karen Butler, who drives with her husband from Georgia to take part in the event. "It's real family time."Yes FIHA is a real thing. And they throw POWWOWS! Although these people don't like it! 1. A picture of yourself and 15 facts about you 2. A picture of you and the person you've been closest with the longest. 3.
