Day 9 - Mi madre es muy bonita

9. A picture of a person who has gotten you through the most
I feel like I've been pretty self sufficient for the past hundreds of millions of years and that I have managed to get myself through the most trying times in my life. But that's not even remotely true. Because the person that made me everything that I am, all of the good and the bad qualities that have gotten me to where I am today, is my mother. She doesn't know how beautiful she is, she doesn't know how smart she is, and she probably doesn't know exactly how much I value her love and affection and - as I've grown older - FRIENDSHIP.
My mother is one of the strongest people that I've ever known and has overcome so much. Sometimes I get frustrated because she doesn't give herself credit for all of the things she's done for herself and for her children. She has instilled in me an independence that I don't see in too many women (you wouldn't know that because I surround myself with the few that I've found). She has given me the gift of laughter and of joy in simple things. Most of all, she's been my rock before I learned to be my own rock. I went through some pretty hard times as a child - probably entirely self inflicted as my personality was honing itself and my shell became tougher - and I remember crying in my bed every day after elementary school with my mother rubbing my back. She was an unflagging advocate for my well-being in school and at home. So you see, before she taught me how to take care of myself and my own problems, she shouldered some of my burdens for me.
We, this privileged generation of children, spend way more time blaming our parents for our faults than we do praising them for our virtues. So THANK YOU MOMMY for everything that you have made me into. Remember that on those occasions where it's difficult to love yourself - because we are women and it happens to the best of us - that I love you enough for both of us. And I'm extremely grateful that you made me who I am today.
